Here is a question that has been bothering me for some time, why do people toss coins into water?

I walk by an alligator pit at the zoo and there are coins strewn all across the pool. I walk by a bridge and there are people tossing coins. I walk by a water fountain and there are people tossing coins. Is there some actual reason for this?
