Confused about ablation?

I heard that its a procedure for mostly women who have very heavy periods, but can you also have it done if you are finished with having kids and dont really have a heavy period? Also, if you have this procedure, is it like your body goes into menopause? Will I need some type of hormone treatment afterwards?
