What kind of watch is best for an active serviceman?

My boyfriend is a police officer, and is also Air Force reserves. He'll be going on deployment soon, and I'd like to get him a nice watch for christmas. What watch brand is good for his type of activity? He works graveyard a lot, and is also an avid surfer and biker.
