Help with understanding a simile from The Great Gatsby?

Basically, the narrator, Nick, feels that Myrtle is not outwardly good looking ("Her face... contained no facet or gleam of beauty.."), but her entire persona radiates sensuality. To Nick, she seems very alive - not charismatic but excitingly y in her own way.
